3 Nissan Models Are Top IIHS Cars For Teens | McAllen, TX

2021 Nisan Altima | McAllen, TX

Choosing a vehicle for your family requires a lot of careful consideration. If your family is growing in size, you will want enough passenger volume to accommodate as you add more members. If you have young children, certain safety technologies and car seat options may be appealing to you. If your family loves to explore the outdoors, you may want something with great towing power for your boat or RV.

But what about families with teen drivers? If you will be sharing your next vehicle with one or more brand-new teen drivers, you will want to think about vehicles that are especially safe for young drivers.

That’s why Bert Ogden McAllen Nissan in McAllen, Texas, is proud to announce that three Nissan vehicles in our lineup — the 2021 Nissan Altima, 2021 Nissan Murano, and 2021 Nissan Rogue — were named among the top recommendations for teen drivers in the recent list from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

In creating this list, the IIHS considered both new and pre-owned vehicles, and Nissan made appearances on both sides of the buying experience.

Best New Vehicles for Teens

Specifically, the IIHS included the 2021 Altima sedan and 2021 Murano crossover on its list of best new vehicles for teens. To earn a spot, vehicles had to include vehicle-to-vehicle automatic emergency braking as a standard safety feature. It helped that both the Nissan Altima and the Nissan Murano recently were named Top Safety Pick+ winners — the highest honor from the IIHS.

The 2021 Nissan Altima is an all-wheel drive sedan packed with safety features, including Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, available Blind Spot Warning, and optional ProPILOT Assist, which is a step toward autonomous driving with lane monitoring, automatic braking and acceleration, and more. On SV trims and above, the Nissan Safety Shield® 360 comes standard; in addition to the Automatic Emergency Braking and Blind Spot Warning, it includes Rear Automatic Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and High Beam Assist.

Also standard with all-wheel drive, the luxurious 2021 Nissan Murano comes standard with the Nissan Safety Shield® 360. Again, this includes Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, High Beam Assist, Blind Spot Warning, and Lane Departure Warning. In addition, the 2021 Murano comes available with Intelligent Cruise Control.

Best Used Vehicles for Teens (Starting Under $20,000)

If you are buying used — whether as a family vehicle or specifically a vehicle to give to your new teen driver — you will want something that is easy on your budget but still offers the greatest safety for your teen driver. IIHS included two Nissan models on the list: the Rogue crossover (model years 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020) and, the Murano crossover (from 2015 through 2020 for model years).

To nab a spot on this list, vehicles had to earn top ratings in IIHS testing (specifically, in moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, as well as driver-side small overlap front test), as well as top scores from the federally run National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In addition, the IIHS needed to see above-average reliability scores from Consumer Reports for most of the model years listed; vehicles also needed to boast standard electronic stability control and weigh in over 2,750 pounds (curb weight). The IIHS used prices provided by Kelley Blue Book.

The list of recommendations from the IIHS for used vehicles for teens included two tiers of vehicles: Best Choices and Good Choices. Both the used Murano and the used Rogue landed in the Best Choices category.
